ABOUT
Jacques Offenbach (1881)
While at a tavern drowning his sorrows, a tortured poet recounts three past romances, all ending in disaster. Inspired by the life and work of German writer E.T.A. Hoffmann, Offenbach’s masterwork is full of surreal twists and stunning music. Offenbach never saw Hoffmann in performance; he died four months prior to the premiere. The piece has been performed in many different editions over the years, with authentic source material being discovered as recently as 1999. Which edition Offenbach would have preferred remains a mystery. With its ravishing barcarolle, high-flying doll song, and a sublime septet, this opéra fantastique is unforgettable.
Sung in French with English supertitles.
