Prelude
Castillroig Cava Brut Rosat, Penedes, Spain, NV
Father and son duo, Marcelino Sabaté and Marcel Sabaté I Coca, operate one of the few family run cava houses in Penedes Spain. Comprised of organically farmed Trepat and Granatxa, Castellroig’s introductory Brut Rosat is bursting with wild strawberry and zesty acidity.
Act I, La Bohème
Las Lilas Vinho Verde, Portugal, 2016
Las Lilas is comprised of 25 year old vines of Louriero and Treixadura. Playfully effervescent in the glass, the wine delivers lovely notes of white flowers, fresh cut lemon and wet stone.
Act II, Tosca
Prova Cega, Douro, Portugal 2015
Located in a valley with influence from the Neiva River, within the demarcated region of Vinho Verde (entre-douro-e-minho), the vines at Quinta de Curvos are strongly influenced by the Atlantic — at the same time benefitting from granite soils as well as the generous exposure to the sun — all of which define the unique character of the wines produced there. In the glass, the wine is richly textured with black fruit, toasty oak and cassis.
Act III,Madama Butterfly
L’effet Papillon, Côtes Catalanes Rouge, France 2016
Winemaker Marjorie Gallet crafts some of the most compelling wines from the Roussillon. The Papillon Rouge bottling is a delightful blend of biodynamically farmed Grenache Noir and Syrah, showcasing unadulterated red and black fruit with hints of spice.

BRIGHT & BUBBLY
Tasting # 1: Bailly Lapierre, Cremants de Bourgogne Brut Reserve, NV
Noted by the great English wine wonk Steven Spurrier as one of the finest cooperatives producing Cremants de Bourgogne, Bailly Lapierre and its 430 winegrowers source fruit from ancient Kimmeridgian laden terroir around the village of Saint-Bris-le-Vineux. In the glass, the wine displays lively notes of green apple, pear and a hint of citrus wrapped up in refreshing acidity.
“Fin ch’han dal vino” | Don Giovanni, Mozart (Efraín Solís)
“O mio babbino caro” | Gianni Schicchi, Puccini (Sara Duchovnay)
“Una voce poco fa” | Il barbiere di Siviglia, Rossini (Aleksandra Romano)
"O sole mio" | Lyrics by Giovanni Capurro; music by Eduardo di Capua and Alfredo Mazzucchi (Clay Hilley)
SMOOTH & SEXY
Tasting # 2: Trentadue, Old Patch Red, 2016
The Trentadue family arrived in Sonoma County in 1959 long before the region gained a reputation. The winery’s 200 acre Geyserville Estate Vineyard is planted to 12 red grape varietals with some vines over 120 years old. The Trentadues are growers first and supply fruit to some of the most esteemed producers in Sonoma. The Old Patch bottling is the winery’s introductory bottling and a kitchen sink blend of Red Zin, Petite Sirah, Carignane & Syrah. In the glass, the wine demonstrates jammy red fruit, baking spices and smoke.
“Quando m'en vo” | La bohème, Puccini (Sara Duchovnay)
“Deh vieni alla finestra” | Don Giovanni, Mozart (Efraín Solís)
“Wie du warst” | Der Rosenkavalier, Strauss (Aleksandra Romano)
“Be My Love” | Sammy Cahn / Nicholas Brodszky (Clay Hilley)
“Il core vi dono” | Così fan tutte, Mozart (Efraín Solís and Aleksandra Romano)
BOLD & BROODING
Tasting # 3: Wellington, Sonoma Cabernet, 2013
Wellington Vineyards is owned by Peter Wellington. His father, John, purchased the winery site in 1986. Today, the father and son team grow approximately half the grapes used and purchase the remainder, primarily from small, unique vineyards. Wellington’s Sonoma Cabernet is a bold and brooding Cali Cabernet. Blackberry, black cherry and blueberry pie dominate the nose with subtle hints of pan grill.
“In sì barbara sciagura” | Semiramide, Rossini (Aleksandra Romano)
"Ah si, ben mio....Di quella pira" | Il trovatore, Verdi (Clay Hilley)
“No word from Tom” | The Rake's Progress, Stravinsky (Sara Duchovnay)
“Ô vin, dissipe la tristesse” | Hamlet, Thomas (Efraín Solís)
TIPSY, TUNEFUL & MORE!
Tasting # 4: Chateau Jarr, Entre-Deux-Mers Rouge, 2015
Chateau Jarr is a 28 hectare organic farm situated in the heart of Entre-Deux-Mers. Claudine and Daniel Bouron currently manage the bucolic property, and the wine produced under their stewardship has been splendid. The estate’s Bordeaux Rouge bottling is comprised of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot, and is vinified in stainless steel. In the glass, the wine is savory with notes of cranberry, plum and violet with hints of mint and dusty earthen aromas. It’s been a great companion on my dining room table during this winter's bitter cold.
“Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen” | Die Zauberflöte, Mozart (Efraín Solís)
“If I Were a Bell” | Guys and Dolls, Loesser (Sara Duchovnay)
“Ah! quel diner” | La Périchole, Offenbach (Aleksandra Romano)
