A mother and her disabled son offer three kings shelter in a single unforgettable night of generosity, hope and faith. OperaDelaware presents a modern re-telling of this beloved opera written by “the American Puccini” in partnership with the Sunday Breakfast Mission, a vital service organization protecting the wellbeing of Wilmington’s unhoused population.

Eric Einhorn joins OperaDelaware as incoming General Director beginning August 1, 2026, bringing more than twenty years of experience in artistic leadership, opera direction, and community-centered production to the company. Praised by Opera News for his "keen eye for detail and character insight," Einhorn has directed productions at the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Glimmerglass Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, and Michigan Opera Theater, among many others. From 2012 to 2023, he served as co-founding General and Artistic Director of On Site Opera, the country's only opera company dedicated to site-specific productions. His direction of Amahl and the Night Visitors at the Sunday Breakfast Mission this December marks a natural homecoming for a director whose career has been built on the conviction that the most powerful performances happen when art meets community on its own ground. Einhorn holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Opera Directing and Voice Performance from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

Pianist and Conductor Julian Grabarek is a highly sought after collaborator on opera productions nationwide. Mr. Grabarek is a Company Artist with OperaDelaware, serving as Resident Coach and Conductor. This fall, he will music direct OD’s chamber productions of Fernanda and Amahl and the Night Visitors and is assistant conductor for their mainstage production of Don Giovanni. Later in the 2026/27 season, Mr. Grabarek will join Opera Philadelphia as a guest coach and harpsichordist for the world premiere of Sitcom by Luke Styles.

In the 2025/26 season, Mr. Grabarek joined the music staff of Des Moines Metro Opera (Associate Conductor, Of Mice and Men), OperaDelaware (Pianist and Coach, Andrea Chénier), and San Diego Opera (Vocal Coach, Carmen). From 2023-2025, he was an Adler Fellow with the San Francisco Opera, where he worked as a member of the music staff on The Magic Flute, Carmen, Idomeneo, and the widely acclaimed world premiere of Huang Ruo’s The Monkey King.

Mr. Grabarek is currently on the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music and in 2027 joins University of Michigan, Department of Voice & Opera as a Visiting Lecturer of Vocal Coaching. In addition to his work in opera, Mr. Grabarek regularly collaborates on recitals with both vocalists and instrumentalists, performing a wide range of repertoire, with a particular passion for the music of Mozart and Czech composers.

Gian Carlo Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors was the first opera ever commissioned for television, premiering on Christmas Eve in 1951 at NBC's Rockefeller Center Studios. Menotti, the Italian-American composer often called "the American Puccini," twice won the Pulitzer Prize for Music, but it is Amahl that endures in the hearts of audiences, performed more frequently across the United States than almost any other opera in the repertoire. It is a miraculous Christmas story about generosity and dignity in the face of abject poverty.

The opera takes place near Bethlehem in the days just after the birth of Christ. Amahl is a disabled boy who walks only with a crutch and has a well-earned reputation for tall tales. His mother, facing destitution, has sold the last of their possessions. When three kings arrive at their door seeking shelter on their way to a newborn Child, the mother offers what little she has. 

The night takes a darker turn when Amahl's mother steals the kings’ gold, not out of greed, but out of love for a son she cannot feed. When she is caught, King Melchior tells her she may keep it because the Holy Child will not need earthly wealth to build his kingdom. Amahl, who has nothing to give, offers the only thing he owns: his crutch. When he does, he is healed and he stands on his own two feet for the first time.
